Description
The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is a face-on spiral galaxy, located 21 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major.
M101 has a diameter of 170'000 light-years and with about a trillion stars, it is about twice as massive as our Milky Way. It has a high number of large Hll star forming regions, some prominent enough to receive their own NGC numbers (marked orange in the annotated image).
Due to interaction with several companion galaxies, but mainly NGC 5474, the spiral pattern of M101 is asymmetrical.
