Description
I took this image during the night after the Swiss National Day. After nightfall, Switzerland is celebrating this day with fireworks. The most popular fireworks in Switzerland are the so-called volcano fountains, a cone shaped cartridge emitting a rain of sparks.
Being in the high mountains for astrophotography, I missed these fireworks, but I saw my volcano fountain nevertheless: just natural.
As a thin overcast was starting to cover the western skies, the blurred stars looked like a rain of sparks, emitted from Mt. Matterhorn, perfectly mimicking the volcano cartridge.
The orange hue of the clouds is produced by light pollution form the Aosta valley on the Italian side of Mt. Matterhorn.
