Artist's Description
I am still fascinated by the southern sky... This is another image taken during my South Atlantic crossing in October.
A roughly quarter moon was riding high in the sky and lighting up a high layer of haze. The sky nevertheless shows astonishing detail and the deep blue sky provides a beautiful contrast to the many red emission nebulas in the Constellation Carina, the most prominent of whom is the Eta Carinae Nebula.
Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky, is reigning the right side of the frame, together with the Large Magellanic Cloud, the biggest sattelite galaxy of our Milky Way.
Just above the horizon, the constellation Crux, better known as the Southern Cross, is rising.
