Description
"Is it possible to shoot the Milky Way when the moon is in the sky?" That's one of the question I hear a lot from beginners. Many astrophotographers answer this question with "no", but they are wrong.
Most astrophotographers do not like moonlight, because it brightens the sky and washes out details. It is however still possible to capture the Milky Way if the moon is not riding right in its middle. Of course, contrast will be pretty low and the sky very blue.
In landscape astrophotography on the other hand, the moon has a big advantage: While omnidirectional starlight makes the foreground look flat and boring, moonlight will make the structures in the landscape pop. It may therefore worth shooting the foreground while the moon is still in the sky, because it provides low level lighting for free and as you are shooting anyway, take also a shot of the sky. You may be surprised what you get.
