Description
"Il Sipr" is the Romansh (that's 4th national language of Switzerland) name for the common swift (Apus Apus), a medium sized bird, superficially similar to the barn swallow.
"Il Spir" is also the name of a viewing platform that resembles a swift taking off into the abyss of the Ruinaulta Gorge, some 400 meters below. The swift is a common sight at the southern faces of the gorge that was dug by the Rhine river through the Flims Rockslide, the biggest rockslide in the world, whose effects are still visible.
The viewing platform was built in 2006 and is not yet very widely known. As it is only accessible by a 45min hike, I was not surprised to have the platform to myself that night.
This enabled me to block the access stairs with a tripod and capture this 'behind the scenes' shot without the risk of somebody tripping over it and falling into the bottomless darkness below.
