Description
Due to the forecasted cloudy weather during the August new moon in Switzerland, I had to look for alternatives. I finally took an intergalactic flight to an undisclosed desert planet near the edge of the universe. You might know it from Star Wars...
For the less Sci-Fi oriented: This is the GI2T (Grand Interferometer of 2 Telescopes) at the Obervatory of the Côte D'Azur in southern France. It consists of the two spherical mount 1.5m telescopes on the right, which can be moved on rails to adjust the baseline between 13 and 65 meters. The striking bubbles of the adjacent laboratory were built by the architect Antti Lovag.
After stating the above, it is obvious that I neither met Obi-Wan Kenobi nor Luke Skywalker, but I had the great pleasure to be joined by the fellow night photographer Ghislain Favé for the shooting.
As the bubble building looks best when facing north, I captured it with the "winter end" of the Milky Way. The red Heart and Soul Nebulas and the rising California Nebula are coloring the sky, while the Double Custer and the open star cluster Melotte 20 shine like dimonds. In the uncropped version the Andromeda Galaxy is visible on the upper right of the frame.
